When an actor wins an Oscar, all bets are off, including the ones he's made with David Cronenberg. Last December, Cronenberg revived The Talking Cure and had recruited Michael Fassbender, Keira Knightley, and Christoph Waltz to psychoanalyze one another in the name of love and medicine. But Waltz has been buried in offers, and Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that he's dropped out of the project in favor of Water For Elephants. Luckily, Cronenberg has a very good actor and friend in his contacts, and he just called him up. The result is that Viggo Mortensen has now joined The Talking Cure as Sigmund Freud.

Cure centers on a young Carl Jung who uses Sigmund Freud's "talking cure" on a young and troubled Russian woman. In the process of psychoanalyzing her, he falls in love with her. Freud comes along, marvels at his success, and anoints him his psychiatric successor. When Jung starts to develop his own ideas about therapy, Freud isn't too happy, and their professional relationship sours. DHD says that the producers have promised "lots of spirited sex" which Cronenberg has always filmed rather well, so no surprise there.

Mortensen and Cronenberg have two excellent films under their belt, and there's no reason to sneer at a third. (Or a fourth if they ever make that Eastern Promises sequel.) I'm eager to see Mortensen work with Fassbender and Knightley (who both rank among my favorites) and the two method men should really fire up the screen. It's going to be good.
Filed under: Drama, Independent, Romance, Casting, DIY/Filmmaking

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The supporting actors and actresses have been broken down. Percentages are pretty high on at least eight of the ten predicted to be announced next Tuesday morning. With ten more available acting slots, there are potentially 17 performances in the running to grab them. Good luck to all of them since it has practically been decided who the winners will be already.

THE LOCKS
Since 1998, every winner of the Screen Actors Guild Awards have been nominated for an Oscar. That makes things pretty easy, don't it? Congratulations to Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) and Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side) on their impending nominations. As with all, we will examine their chances to win the Oscar at a later date. Plenty of time for that. Since 2001, there have been 33 leading men and women who have been nominated from the following five groups: The BFCA, the Golden Globes, the Chicago Film Critics Association, the Screen Actors Guild and the BAFTAs. All 33 were nominated for an Oscar. This year there are five that fall into that illustrious category. One of them being Bridges. The other four are George Clooney (Up In The Air), Carey Mulligan (An Education), Gabourey Sidibe (Precious) and Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia)

Now that we're in the middle of the awards season, it's time to look back and praise the performances the world forgot -- and perhaps even complain that they did so. Everyone's going to be doing it. Variety's Timothy Gray did today, noting that he thought Paul Rudd and Gerard Butler turned in fine performances in I Love You, Man and Law Abiding Citizen, respectively. As he wisely puts it, "There are three types of good pics: awards front-runners, dark horses and the terrific work that, for whatever reason, does not seem to be considered a contender ... This isn't one of those 'what's wrong with the awards voters!' screeds. There are enough of those at this time of year, and they're almost always silly. (The subtext is usually 'Those voters are idiots because they didn't pick my favorites.') The point is that awards recognize terrific work, but they can't be expected to honor all terrific work." I don't want to launch into one of the aforementioned screeds, but two of my favorite performances of 2009 have completely fallen off the radar. I thought I'd praise them now, complain a little bit, and then open the floor to you.

The first on my list is Viggo Mortensen in The Road. For whatever reason, The Weinstein Company thought they could only champion one film this awards season, and it was Nine. The Road fell by the wayside. (Pun not intended.) Critical consensus seems to be divided on the film itself, and your opinion may vary, but I thought the film was bleakly brilliant. I thought Mortensen was outstanding -- haunting, starved, and desperate. It was all there. If anyone was able to actually watch him put a gun up to his own son's head and not shiver at the look behind his eyes, I'd be surprised. It was equal to anything Jeremy Renner did in The Hurt Locker, or any of George Clooney's frowns in Up in the Air. My personal opinion was that it surpassed it, but that's just my take.

Having just moved up the release date of Thor two weeks to open the summer movie season of 2011, Paramount Pictures has just lost their Fandral. The Associated Press is reporting that Stuart Townsend has left the production of Kenneth Branagh's Marvel adaptation, a day before shooting, over - wait for it - "creative differences." The ally of the Norse god (being played by Chris Hemsworth) will now be portrayed by Joshua Dallas, who will also be seen in the upcoming The Descent 2 and George Lucas' Tuskegee Airmen film, Red Tails, alongside Terrence Howard who dropped out of Iron Man 2. Oh, the circle of Hollywood life.

Townsend's name is famous for being replaced by Peter Jackson in the role of Aragorn for The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Viggo Mortensen eventually took the role and has since gone on to great acclaim in roles in A History of Violence and an Oscar-nominated turn in Eastern Promises. Meanwhile, Townsend has followed in the footsteps of Tom Cruise taking on the role of the vampire Lestat in Queen of the Damned and as Dorian Gray in another doomed literary adaptation, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Filed under: Casting, Celebrities and Controversy, Peter Jackson

Continue reading Stuart Townsend Ditches 'Thor' Over "Creative Differences"

Permalink | Email this | Comments
